As a plastic surgery practice, we get asked this question a lot. Patients want to know if there’s a good time to undergo surgery, or if there are times when they shouldn’t schedule surgery. The answer depends on you, of course! Every person is different. However, we do have some general guidelines for helping you decide when to schedule your procedure.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself when planning for plastic surgery:
Do you want to look a certain way for a special event like a wedding or anniversary party?
If your goal is to be not only presentable but truly fabulous for a special occasion, you’ll probably want to schedule your surgery as quickly as possible to give you ample time to heal and look your radiant best.
Are you undergoing a tummy tuck, body lift or breast augmentation?
Though you won’t be bed-ridden for long, certain body procedures require months of recovery time and wearing compression garments. If you are undergoing a body contouring procedure, we may recommend scheduling it in the winter months when you are wearing clothing that can easily conceal your wounds as they are healing.
Does your procedure also involve laser skin treatments?
Lasers and the sun do not mix. Sun exposure after surgery is also a bad idea. This is because the sun can interfere with your healing process and result in pigmentation problems and other complications.
Do you have a good amount of vacation time you can use?
No matter when you schedule your surgery, be sure to schedule it when you have ample time to rest and recover in the comfort and privacy of your home. Surgery can involve a surprisingly efficient and easy recovery process, but the quality of your recovery truly depends on you. Be sure to take it easy and follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions to the T to ensure your healing goes as smoothly and quickly as possible. If you have questions, don’t ever hesitate to call us!
