From bug bites and heat rashes to sun burns and brown spots, summertime is notorious for skin problems! One of the most common summertime skin concerns is melasma. This stubborn skin condition can be very challenging to treat. We get it, and it’s one of the reasons why we specialize in skin revitalization treatments here at Abilene Plastic Surgery & MedSpa. Our goal is to help you solve your complexion troubles and love the skin you’re in.
That said, here’s the lowdown on melasma, along with a few expert tips for treating it:
Melasma
Women are prone to melasma, especially during pregnancy. This common skin condition causes brown to gray-brown patches on the face or body, typically in areas that get a lot of sun exposure. Some people get melasma like clockwork in the summer, in specific areas of the face like on the upper lip and under the eyes or forehead. No matter what your melasma looks like or where it occurs, there are several effective ways to help prevent and treat it.
●
Sunscreen and sun protection
Preventing sun exposure is paramount with melasma, as sun is a major trigger. Here at Abilene Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we offer several medical-grade sunscreens to help protect your skin and enhance its beauty.
●
Talk to your doctor about hormones.
Pregnancy can often bring about melasma, as can birth control pills.
●
Topical medicines
Hydroquinone: According to the American Dermatological Association, this skin-lightening medicine is a common first treatment for melasma. Other topical skin agents that help lighten skin include tretinoin (brand name Retin A) and corticosteroids.
Depending on your needs, you may benefit from a “triple cream” containing all three ingredients. Azelaic acid or kojic acid, prescribed by a doctor, may also help lighten melasma.
●
Professional skin treatments
Exfoliating your skin and encouraging new skin growth is another effective method for improving melasma. We offer a wide range of exfoliating treatments that help remove dull skin cells and encourage the growth of bright, new skin, including chemical peels (suitable for almost every skin tone) and microdermabrasion (a gentle abrasive treatment that polishes the skin, also suitable for a wide range of skin tones).
For other pigmentation issues, such as dark spots and rosacea or other redness, laser treatments may help for lighter skin tones. Our leading skin rejuvenation menu includes Halo™, ProFractional™ laser skin resurfacing, MicroLaserPeel® and BBL™ photofacial.
During your personal consultation, we will carefully review your symptoms and help you devise a treatment plan that’s right for your skin.
